China is the mother country of silk. Guangdong is the important province of silk production, and it is still more the starting point of the Maritime Silk Way. It is worthy to speak that silk is a great contribution of our country, which is an old civilized nation with several thousand years of history, to the world's material and immaterial culture. As approved by historical documents and archeology, our country began growing mulberries, sericulture and making silk more than four thousand years ago. This has caused great influences on various aspects of social civilization progress of China, i.e. political economy, social life, ideology philosophy, religion culture, literature and art etc, thus forming the silk culture with unique witchery. Especially the Maritime Silk Way and the overland Silk Road, which influenced the world history for over 2000 years, are still more the belts connecting Chinese culture with foreign culture. This has changed the face of the world by its deep historic cultural connotation and florid mien, possessing until now great convulsion power, and it will act with further extension.

    The silk culture of Guangdong has close relation with its custom. A lot of mores and comity in south of the Five Ridges are related with silkworm and mulberry, showing that silk has been widely used in the life of Cantonese people. These fashions and mores include mainly the vogues of the New Year and seasons' events, living convenance, civilian religions and naissance meetings etc.
